Dr.Michael C. Pitter

1959 - 2016

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Dr. Michael Claude Pitter was an innovator in the field of minimally invasive gynecological surgery.

Dr. Michael C. Pitter obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical engineering from the University of Illinois-Chicago. In his two years as a chemical processing engineer, he was awarded a patent proposal for a device used in the extrusion of plastic pellets into a semi-permeable three-layer bag. Afterward, he transitioned into medicine. In 1990, Dr. Pitter graduated from the University of Medicine & Dentistry of NJ (currently Rutgers Medical School) and later completed his internship and residency as an OB/GYN at the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in New Jersey.

At Newark Beth Israel, Dr. Pitter grew both passionate and proficient in minimally invasive gynecological surgery (MIGS), using his engineering knowledge to leverage the innovative use of emerging robotic technologies. He continued his work at Columbia University Medical Center and New York-PresbyterianWestchester (formerly Lawrence Hospital) as an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Director of Robotic Surgery, respectively. 

With over 20 years of experience in MIGS, Dr. Pitter is a published author with articles appearing in many peer-reviewed journals and surgical textbooks. He specialized in performing complex fertility-sparing pelvic surgery with an emphasis on advanced laparoscopic and tele-robotic surgical techniques. He has operated on three continents and continued to learn while mentoring new surgeons.

In addition to his career, Dr. Pitter co-founded and served as an active member of the Caribbean Medical Mission, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free medical care in the remote areas of various Caribbean countries including parts of Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. 

 As a pioneer and one of the foremost authorities in gynecological robotic surgery, he completed the first robot-assisted hysterectomy in Bergen County, NJ. He is the recipient of the Distinguished National Faculty Teaching Award from both the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics & Gynecology and from the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is also a recipient of the Alfred l. Deutsch Memorial Lecture Speaker's Award from Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Pitter has always enjoyed family time with his beloved wife of 30 years Irma Pitter and children, Michael and JoAnne.
